Urunga

Urunga is a surf spot located in New South Wales, Australia. This spot is known for its exposed location, which means it is often influenced by wind conditions. Surfers are advised to catch the waves early in the day if offshore winds aren’t present. The surf spot typically has enough sand to create nice, hollow waves, though they can be quite powerful. The water is clean, and the spot is set against a backdrop of mountains, offering a scenic experience. The waves at Urunga provide both left and right rides, and the sandy bottom makes it accessible for surfers of all levels. The waves break at all tides, and the quality is considered a regional classic. The length of the wave is usually less than 50 meters, and the spot is not very crowded, with only a few surfers typically present. Nearby surf spots include Valla Beach, Nambucca Heads, Sawtell, Black Rock, and Murrays. Urunga is accessible via the Pacific Highway and can be reached by car, bus, or train. To get to the surf spot, head east of the highway to a caravan park and public park on the river, then walk about 10 minutes along a boardwalk. The waves usually break on the south side of the breakwall, and sometimes right in the middle of the river. It’s important to respect the locals and check the surf etiquette when surfing crowded spots. Always check your skills before paddling out to make sure the spot and conditions fit your surfing level. The town of Urunga is south of Coffs Harbour and Sawtell, and north of Nambucca Heads. The name Urunga is derived from the Gumbaynggir word Yurūnga, meaning ‘long white sands.’
