About this Spot

Trapdoors is a surf spot located in New South Wales, Australia. It is known for its right-hand wave direction and sandy bottom, making it a regional classic surf spot. The wave quality is suitable for intermediate surfers, and the spot is very consistent, offering waves less than 50 meters in length. The best conditions for surfing at Trapdoors are during low and medium tides. The spot is not usually crowded, so you can enjoy the waves with few other surfers around. To reach Trapdoors, head to Sawtell and park your car at the northern carpark, which has two water tanks. From there, walk about 500 meters until you find the river mouth on the northern side of the headland, where the waves break. Be cautious as the wave can get sucky in the corner, and sometimes it fires off heavy barrels, so avoid getting caught on the inside. If you find yourself stuck in the break zone, paddle in and back out through the river mouth. It’s important to check your skills before paddling out to make sure the spot and conditions fit your surfing level. Always be mindful of the surf etiquette, especially when surfing crowded spots. Respect the locals.
