About this Spot

Saltwater is a surf spot located in New South Wales, Australia, known for its right-hand point break. This surf spot can handle waves up to 4 meters, but it performs exceptionally well in the 1.5 to 2-meter range. The take-off at Saltwater varies depending on the swell size and direction, occurring over large, sand-covered boulders. On larger days, the wave begins further out with a jacking take-off, followed by a bowling inside section before swinging towards the beach in a series of cutback sections. However, it loses momentum in the dredging shore break on the beach, which can become a massive rip on big days, smashing with great force against the rocks. Saltwater works on all tides, but it is hollower and better at lower tides. Surfers usually jump from the point, but mistiming can lead to a whirlpool ride over razor-sharp, barnacle-encrusted rocks. This spot is tucked away near the Victorian border and is part of a National Park. In winter months, the spot is virtually empty due to the cold, while in summer, it gets crowded like the rest of the south coast of New South Wales. The wave is hollow with long walls and occasional tubes, breaking for about 100 meters or more, and it handles some size, getting longer when bigger, up to about 150 meters. It is best in big southeast swells, lower tides, and south winds, though northeast swells might also work. The surf spot is beautiful, and you can camp overnight for a small fee, with bookings managed by the New South Wales National Parks and Wildlife Service. There are no water or shops, so bring all necessary gear. It is advised not to surf alone, as help is miles away. To reach Saltwater, turn off in Ben Boyd National Park, about 15 minutes south of Eden, then follow signs on a dirt road for another 15 minutes to the car park, followed by a 5-minute walk to the point. You can jump off rocks or paddle from the beach. The spot has a sand and rock bottom and is suitable for intermediate surfers. The wave length ranges from 50 to 150 meters, and it is generally uncrowded. Nearby surf spots include The Cobra, Asling’s Beach, Pambula Rivermouth, Merimbula Bar, and Tura Reef. Remember to respect the locals, check the surf etiquette when surfing crowded spots, and check your skills before paddling out to ensure the spot and conditions fit your surfing level.
