About this Spot

Shark Island is a surf spot located in New South Wales, Australia. This spot is known for its challenging waves and is best suited for experienced surfers. The wave direction allows for both left and right rides, making it versatile for those who can handle its intensity. The bottom is a sharp coral reef, and the tide is best at high. The wave quality is considered world-class, but it’s important to note that the length of the wave is less than 50 meters. The crowd is generally sparse, with few surfers, but the atmosphere can be competitive due to the presence of bodyboarders. The main break is a hardcore reef made of sharp rock and cunji, and the wave can suck up on a dry reef, making it extremely shallow. The takeoff peak crumbles at around 5 feet, leading to a barrel over the shallow reef called Whitrock. If you make it through that, you ride high on the wave face through the infamous surge. Access to the spot involves jumping off rocks at Cronulla Point and paddling for 2-3 minutes across a flat channel. Alternatively, you can paddle for over 20 minutes or take a boat. Nearby spots include Harvey’s Little Point, Toads, Cronulla Point, Shelley, and Windy Point. It’s important to check the surf etiquette when surfing crowded spots and always respect the locals. Before paddling out, check your skills to ensure the spot and conditions fit your surfing level. Remember to include keywords such as surf, surfing, spot, forecast, report, map, and webcam when researching or discussing this location.
