About this Spot

Gas Bay is a surf spot located in South West Australia, Australia. Known for its exceptional tube waves that break both left and right, Gas Bay offers a thrilling experience for intermediate surfers. The spot is characterized by a coral reef and sand bottom, which contributes to the world-class quality of the waves. The waves at Gas Bay typically range from 50 to 150 meters in length, providing ample opportunity for surfers to carve and ride. The spot is not overly crowded, allowing surfers to enjoy the waves without too much competition. However, it’s important to be aware of the rips and undertow that can be present, making it crucial for surfers to check their skills before paddling out to ensure the spot and conditions match their surfing level. The name ‘Gas Bay’ is derived from ‘gas chambers,’ a nod to the challenging nature of the waves where surfers can enter but might not come out unscathed. As the tide changes, sand can flush onto the reef, creating messy conditions, but these clear up as the tide settles. To reach Gas Bay, drive as far south as you can on Caves Road into Prevelly Park, and when the road turns to gravel, continue until you reach a car park. From there, stand on the hill to the left and round the point to find Gas Bay. Nearby surf spots include Grunters, Boodjidup, Gnarabup, Margaret River Bommie, and Margaret River Point. When surfing at Gas Bay, it’s important to respect the locals and check the surf etiquette, especially in crowded spots. Always remember to check your skills before paddling out to make sure the spot and conditions fit your surfing level. Respect the locals.
