Overview
About this Spot
Mooloolaba is a surf spot located in Queensland, Australia, on the Sunshine Coast, about 97 kilometers north of Brisbane. The spot sits on a curving shoreline facing north-east to north, sheltered by Point Cartwright, with the Mooloolaba Harbour entrance wall marking the eastern end. The beach has a sand bottom and works on all tides. The surf spot provides both left and right waves. Mooloolaba is suitable for all levels, and is good for beginners, but when the swell is small, other Sunshine Coast spots might offer better surf. The spot sometimes breaks, with wave length ranging from 50 to 150 meters. Boards like shortboards, mid and retro boards, and longboards are all used here. The area can get crowded, so respect the locals and always check the surf etiquette when the spot is busy. The beach is backed by a foreshore reserve with the Mooloolaba Surf Life Saving Club, a beachfront caravan park, and plenty of parking. The surf is usually gentle due to the protection from Point Cartwright, with average wave heights between 0.5 to 1 meter near the surf club, and less than 0.5 meters near the harbour entrance. Rips can form when waves get over 1 meter, especially near the northern rocks. For the best surf forecast, look for swells from the northeast, east, or southeast, with a minimum swell height of 3 feet, and winds from the south, southwest, or west. Nearby surf spots include Dedis, The Spit Mooloolaba, The Bluff, Point Cartwright, and Alexandra Headlands. Check your skills before paddling out, be sure that the spot and conditions fit your surfing level.
