Overview
About this Spot
Pondie is a surf spot located in South Australia, Australia. The spot provides both left and right waves, with a bottom consisting of rocks and sand. The ideal tide for surfing here is medium, and the quality of the waves is considered a regional classic. Surfers of all experience levels can enjoy the waves at Pondie, with wave lengths ranging from 50 to 150 meters. The spot is known to have few surfers, making it less crowded compared to other locations. Nearby surf spots include West Cape, Chinamans, Ethels Wreck, Richard’s Reef, and Willyama Bay. When planning a surf trip to Pondie, it’s important to check the surf forecast, report, and map to ensure optimal conditions. The spot is accessible by reaching Innes National Park, where you can ask for directions at Rhino’s Head Tavern or follow the signposted turnoffs to the campground called Surfers. Be cautious of the rips and undertow, and watch out for sharks. Paddle out either side of the reef, and if the waves are big, only the right should be working. The wave has the best form when not affected by tide movement and after a ‘summerpack’ sand formation on the beach. It’s one of the first spots to check when arriving at Yorkes. The campsite can get busy during holiday periods, and if it’s too crowded, you might consider heading up the beach to Richards. There have been stories of 8ft days, so checking the swell map is advisable. The break can be reached by taking a path to the beach, with a 500m walk leading directly to the boardwalk where the waves break. Always respect the locals and check the surf etiquette when the spot is crowded. Before paddling out, check your skills to ensure the spot and conditions match your surfing level. Respect the locals.
