Overview
About this Spot
Richard’s Reef is a surf spot located in South Australia, Australia. This spot is known for its predominantly right-hand wave that breaks on a medium-sized reef, holding waves up to about 3 feet. The reef is named after Mr. Richard A. Thomas, a well-known local surfer who was one of the first surfers to live in the area from the mid-1970s until his death in 2015. To reach Richard’s Reef, park your car at the Pondalowie Bay car park off Browns Beach Road and take the boardwalk over to the beach. Once on the beach, walk north for half a kilometer to find the break. The spot is a good alternative when the main break at Pondalowie becomes too crowded. The best winds for surfing here are east to southeast on a southwest swell. The bottom consists of rocks and sand, and the tide is best at medium. Richard’s Reef is considered a regional classic and is suitable for surfers of all levels. The wave length ranges from 50 to 150 meters, and the spot is usually not crowded, with only a few surfers. Nearby surf spots include Ethels Wreck, Pondie, Chinamans, West Cape, and Willyama Bay. It’s important to check the surf etiquette when the spot is crowded and to assess your skills before paddling out to ensure the conditions match your surfing level. Respect the locals.
