Pichicuy is a surf spot located in Central, Chile, in the commune of La Ligua, Valparaíso Region, about 137 kilometers north of Viña del Mar and 174 kilometers northwest of Santiago. The spot sits by a long beach with white sand and clear water, next to a fishing village. The beach stretches for over six kilometers and is divided into three main sectors: Rocas de Los Patos, Punta de La Poza, and Caleta Pichicuy. The bottom is sandy, and the spot works on all tides. The surf here is known for being consistent, with waves that can range from small and fun to very large and powerful, especially during winter swells. On big days, the waves can be heavy, with strong rips and undertow, and the currents can get intense. The spot is considered a regional classic and is best suited for intermediate and experienced surfers. Boards like shortboards, mid-lengths, and retro shapes are commonly used. The spot provides both left and right waves. The best swell direction is from the southwest or west, with a minimum swell height of 2 feet needed for the spot to work. The best wind direction is from the northwest, north, northeast, or east. The length of the ride is usually less than 50 meters. The water is cold, and the area is often solitary, with few surfers in the lineup, especially on weekdays. On small days, the waves are more manageable, but on big days, the spot can be challenging and even intimidating. Nearby surf spots include Punta Docas, Salinas de Pullalli, Los Molles, La Marmola, and Papudo. Always respect the locals, especially when the spot is crowded, and check the surf etiquette.
