Overview
About this Spot
Ma’alaea is a surf spot located in Maui, Hawaii. The spot provides right waves. It’s situated on a coral reef bottom and requires intermediate surfing experience. Ma’alaea is known for its fast right-hand reef breaks, often called ‘Freight Trains.’ The waves here are considered to be among the fastest rights in the world. The spot sometimes breaks, offering rides between 50 to 150 meters in length. It’s best suited for experienced surfers due to the speed of the waves and the shallow reef bottom. Ma’alaea works best with medium tides and is most prominent during summer months with south to southwest swells. The spot is located near Ma’alaea Harbor on Maui’s southern coast. When surfing here, it’s important to check the surf forecast and report before paddling out. The area usually has few surfers, but it’s always good to respect the locals and follow surf etiquette. Check your skills before paddling out to make sure the spot and conditions fit your surfing level. To access the spot, park at the Maui Ocean Center and take a short walk to the east side of the boat harbor. Be aware of the rocks in the area. Ma’alaea rarely breaks, so don’t plan your trip solely around this spot. Watch for big New Zealand swells as they can create optimal conditions. Nearby surf spots include Grandma’s, Kihei Cove, Olowalu, Kahului Harbor, and Big Eds. In 2012, after a long campaign, plans for harbor expansion that could have threatened the reef and wave quality were halted. This spot is considered a world classic when conditions align, offering some of the most exhilarating rides in Hawaii. Remember to check the surf map and webcam (if available) for current conditions. Maui, the second largest Hawaiian island, is known for its diverse landscape and is a popular tourist destination, with nearly three million visitors in 2022.
