About this Spot

Kahului Harbor is a surf spot located in Maui, Hawaii, situated on the north-central coast of the island. This spot features a rocky and sandy bottom and works on all tides. Large swells enter through the wide harbor entrance, creating powerful waves that refract from the deeper channel and interact with the jetty, forming a mini-box-like wedge that is popular among both bodyboarders and surfers. There is also a left wave off the same peak, though it is less significant as it spills into the deeper channel. The waves at Kahului Harbor are known for being very thick and powerful, often doubling-up or tripling-up when big sets arrive, creating steep and heavy conditions. For optimal surf conditions, the spot works best with north and northeast swells, requiring a minimum of 3 feet to break properly. The best wind direction comes from the south, southwest, and west, which helps maintain clean wave faces. This is a world-class quality surf spot that is recommended for intermediate and advanced surfers only, as it is not suitable for beginners due to its powerful waves and various hazards. Surfers should be aware of several dangers including sea urchins, rocks, strong rip currents, pollution, and sharks. The spot can get crowded, especially during good swell conditions, with many bodyboarders in the lineup. When crowded, it’s important to respect the locals and follow proper surf etiquette. Access to Kahului Harbor is straightforward – continue down Lower Main Street where you’ll find a large dirt area with dirt bikers, and the harbor is right there with the surf spot located off the rocks. There’s also a break called ‘Middles’ in the middle of the harbor that holds up well when conditions are large. Parking is available along the harbor area. Check your skills before paddling out to make sure the spot and conditions fit your surfing level, as this location requires experience to handle its powerful and potentially dangerous conditions.
