About this Spot
Waiehu Beach Park is a surf spot located in Maui, Hawaii. The spot provides both left and right waves. It’s situated on Maui’s northern shoreline, just north of Wailuku. This regional classic surf spot is known for its very consistent waves, with a coral reef bottom. The wave length ranges from 50 to 150 meters. Waiehu Beach Park is suitable for surfers of all levels, but it can get crowded. Check your skills before paddling out to make sure the spot and conditions fit your surfing level. When it’s busy, it’s crucial to respect the locals and follow proper surf etiquette. The spot is known for its winter surfing and fishing opportunities. Be aware of potential hazards such as urchins, rips, undertow, rocks, and sharks. In November 2024, a shark attack occurred here, resulting in a surfer’s leg being severed. The park offers basic amenities like picnic tables and barbecue grills, but lacks restrooms and showers. There are no lifeguards on duty, so swimming is not recommended. To reach Waiehu Beach Park from Lahaina, take Highway 30 east to Wailuku, turn right on Ka’ahumanu Avenue, left on Lower Main Street, and left again on Waiehu Beach Road. Follow the signs to the park. Nearby surf spots include Paukukalo, Churches, Big Eds, Kahului Harbor, and Pier One. The spot is popular for bodyboarding, particularly at a section called Churches. While the waves can be choppy, it’s considered a great bodyboarding location. Further down, there’s a surfing area known as Sand Piles. Remember to check the latest surf forecast and report before your visit. A surf map or webcam, if available, can provide real-time conditions of the spot.
