About this Spot

Richardsons is a surf spot located in Big Island, Hawaii. The spot provides both left and right waves. Richardsons is situated in a county park just east of Hilo. The beach features a unique mix of black and green sand, composed of black lava and green olivine crystals. Surfers can expect an exposed reef break that’s active year-round, with summer, particularly July, offering the best conditions. The ideal swell direction is east-southeast, with waves typically ranging from 2 to 4 feet. The surf spot is less than 50m in length and can get crowded, especially on weekends. It’s important to respect the locals and follow surf etiquette when the spot is busy. The bottom is characterized by boulders, and the spot works best during medium and high tides. Richardsons is suitable for surfers of all levels, but it’s crucial to check your skills before paddling out to ensure the spot and conditions match your abilities. Be aware of potential hazards such as urchins, rips, undertows, rocks, and occasionally sharks. The spot is known for its fast right break over a shallow reef, which can produce impressive barrels when the swell is right. However, the speed and shallow reef can be challenging for inexperienced surfers. To reach Richardsons, drive from Hilo past four miles on Kalanianaole Avenue until you reach Richardson Beach Park. Park and head to the shore on the right side of the pavilions. The park offers amenities like picnic areas, restrooms, showers, and a lifeguard on duty during operating hours. Nearby surf spots include 4 Miles, Chocks, Hilo Breakwall, Bayfront, and Tombstones. Remember to always check the surf forecast and report before your session. The park has an interesting history, named after its original owners, Elsa and George Richardson, whose home still stands there and now operates as the Richardson Ocean Center.
