About this Spot

Chocks is a surf spot located in Big Island, Hawaii. The spot provides left waves. It features a coral reef bottom and is suitable for all experience levels. Chocks sometimes breaks, offering waves less than 50m in length. The spot is typically empty, making it a good option for those seeking a less crowded surfing experience. Chocks works best during medium and high tides. Nearby surf spots include 4 Miles, Richardsons, Hilo Breakwall, Bayfront, and Tombstones. To reach Chocks, drive from Hilo towards 4 miles, past the breakwall, and make a left down Keokea Loop. Drive to the end, park, and walk down the small entrance behind the rock wall. The beach is past the coconut trees. The water is very shallow, so you may need to walk out to the break. Surfers should be aware of potential hazards such as urchins, rips, undertow, and rocks. Chocks rarely breaks, but when it does, it offers a nice left over the reef. The break is similar to Richardsons and needs to be over 5 foot face to be enjoyable. Check your skills before paddling out to ensure the spot and conditions match your surfing level. When the spot is crowded, it’s important to respect the locals and follow proper surf etiquette. Chocks Beach, also known as Chalks Beach, is accessible via Keokea Loop Road, where a ‘Shoreline Public Access’ sign marks the entrance. Parking is limited, so park responsibly. The beach is open daily from 7 am to 7 pm, and pets are not allowed. The area features lava rocks, tide pools, and a small pebbly beach. Winter is generally the best season for surfing at Chocks, with optimal conditions occurring when a north-northwest swell combines with an east-southeast wind. Swell sizes typically range from 1.0 to 2.5 meters (3 to 8 feet). For those interested in surfing lessons or equipment rentals, Hilo offers several shops and surf schools along the waterfront.
