About this Spot

Horners is a surf spot located in Kauai, Hawaii. The spot features a reef break with waves that break to the left over a rocky reef bottom. The surf spot provides both left and right waves. Horners has three distinct breaks: the inside break (shallow), the middle break near Horners rock, and the outer break beyond the rock. The bottom consists of coral reef and sand. Nearby surf spots include Kealia, Kalapaki Beach, Anahola Bay, Cabbage Heads, and Flags. When surfing Horners, be aware of potential hazards such as rips, undertow, rocks, and sharks. The spot is best during winter months, especially when a north swell combines with offshore winds from the west-southwest. Access to Horners is convenient, located directly off the highway in Wailua. There’s a small parking lot, but it fills up quickly, so you might need to park elsewhere and walk to the spot. Horners is considered a good place for tourists to surf and enjoy time with family. It’s described as having a mellow atmosphere and being relatively safe, although it’s important to stay alert. To get there, take Kuhio Hwy going North to Hanalei. Pass the Holiday Inn Sunspree Resort, cross Wailua river bridge, and continue north for about 200 yards. Look for a parking lot with a large tree on the right. Remember to check your skills before paddling out to make sure the spot and conditions fit your surfing level. When the spot is crowded, it’s crucial to respect the locals and follow proper surf etiquette. Kauai, where Horners is located, is known as the ‘Garden Isle’ and is the fourth-largest of the Hawaiian Islands. It’s situated 73 miles northwest of Oʻahu and had a population of 73,298 as of 2020.
