Overview
About this Spot
Anahola Bay is a surf spot located in Kauai, Hawaii. The spot provides both left and right waves. Anahola Bay is situated on Kauai’s northeastern coast, about 13 miles north of Lihue. The bay features a shallow sandbar and a wide, long calcareous sand beach. Surf sites are located in the shorebreak on the sandbar. The spot sometimes breaks and is best suited for experienced surfers. The waves can reach lengths of 50 to 150 meters. Anahola Bay has a low to medium tide and a sandy bottom. The spot is known for its rips and undertow, so surfers should be cautious. Localism can be an issue here, so it’s important to respect the locals and follow surf etiquette, especially when the spot is crowded. However, the crowd is often sparse, making it a potentially peaceful surf experience. Check your skills before paddling out to make sure the spot and conditions fit your surfing level. Nearby surf spots include Cabbage Heads, Flags, Kealia, Horners, and Rock Quarry Beach. The area around Anahola Bay has some interesting features. There’s a surf site called Unreals next to the ruins of a former interisland steamer landing. The beach park at the north end is on Hawaiian Homes’ land, leased from the state since 1955. A 4×4 vehicle might be useful for accessing certain areas. Historically, Anahola is the site of an ancient surfing area called Ka-nahā-wale, which translates to “easily broken” in Hawaiian. The name Anahola itself means “deadly winds” in Hawaiian. The area is overlooked by Kalalea Mountain, which has been featured in popular films. For the most up-to-date surf conditions, it’s recommended to check the surf forecast, report, and any available webcams before your visit.
