About this Spot

Matanzas Inlet is a surf spot located in Atlantic Coast, Florida. The spot provides both left and right waves. It’s situated about 14 miles south of St. Augustine, connecting the Atlantic Ocean and the Matanzas River. This natural, undredged inlet offers a unique surfing experience due to its shifting sands, which create variable wave conditions. The spot features a sand bottom and works on all tides. Matanzas Inlet is suitable for surfers of all levels and is known as a regional classic. The waves here are regular, with a length of less than 50m. Typically, you’ll find few surfers in the lineup. The spot almost always breaks bigger than local beach breaks and gets swell from various directions. When the sand aligns properly, surfers can enjoy long rides. The southern area is particularly good for longboarding due to its gently breaking waves. Currents can be strong, so it’s advisable to observe from the bridge before paddling out. Parking is available on the hill on the south side. The best surfing conditions usually occur from fall through spring, especially during hurricane swells. Nearby spots include Peanuts, Crescent Beach, Lighthouse, Ocean Gallery, and D-Country. While the water may appear murky, this is often due to natural tannins from local rivers. It’s important to be aware of the presence of sharks in the area. Check your skills before paddling out to make sure the spot and conditions fit your surfing level. When the spot is crowded, remember to respect the locals and follow proper surf etiquette. Historically, the inlet played a strategic role during the Spanish colonial period, with Fort Matanzas built nearby in 1742 to guard the southern approach to St. Augustine. Today, Matanzas Inlet offers a diverse surfing environment with varying wave conditions and a welcoming atmosphere for surf enthusiasts seeking a forecast, report, or simply a spot to catch some waves.
