About this Spot

Mokuleia is a surf spot located in Oahu North Shore, Hawaii. This regional classic surf spot breaks over a coral reef and sand bottom and works at all tides. The spot is suitable for intermediate and advanced surfers but is not recommended for beginners due to its challenging conditions. Mokuleia can be surfed with shortboards, mid-length and retro boards, and longboards. The surf spot provides both left and right waves. Wave length ranges from 50 to 150 meters and the spot gets regular surf with few surfers in the water. For the best surf forecast, Mokuleia works best with northwest, north, and northeast swell directions with a minimum swell height of 3 feet. The optimal wind direction for clean conditions is southeast, south, and southwest winds. The spot is located near other surf breaks including Pierson’s, Yokohama Bay, Avalanche, Haleiwa, and Puaena Point. You can park at Mokuleia Beach Park but avoid bringing valuables due to theft risk. The waves can be dangerous with strong rip currents and undertow present. Large sets are common and can clean out the lineup, so only paddle out through the channel if sets are over 4 feet. During winter months, the area becomes shark breeding grounds adding to the hazards. When paddling out over 5 feet, catch waves all the way to shore and return through the channel to avoid getting caught inside. The spot is situated between Waialua and Ka’ena Point on the North Shore, an area known for massive winter swells. Check your skills before paddling out to make sure the spot and conditions fit your surfing level. Even if crowds are generally light, respect for locals and proper surf etiquette remain important when sharing waves with other surfers.
