Tamarindo is a surf spot located in Guanacaste, Costa Rica. The spot sits on a bay with a mix of sand and rock bottom, and the main beach break is less than 50 meters long. Surfing here is possible for all levels, but it is important to check your skills before paddling out, be sure that the spot and conditions fit your surfing level. The surf spot provides both left and right waves. The best surf conditions are usually early in the morning or in the afternoon, as the waves tend to be smaller during the middle of the day. The area has several peaks, including the main beach break in the town center, El Estero river mouth to the north, Pico Pequeno to the south, and Isla Capitán further out. The main beach break is known for being suitable for beginners and longboarders, while Pico Pequeno and Isla Capitán are better for intermediate and advanced surfers. The Rock is a wave within walking distance from Hotel Capitan, and you should ask locals for directions if you want to surf there. Be careful of rocks when entering and exiting the water. You can find beachfront hotels like El Capitan, or park your car and walk through the hotel strip to reach the beach. The spot is usually empty, but when it gets crowded, respect the locals and always follow surf etiquette. Nearby surf spots include Playa Grande, Pico Grande, Suizo, El Estero, and Playa Langosta.
