Overview
About this Spot
Playa Grande is a surf spot located in Guanacaste, Costa Rica, within the Las Baulas National Marine Park. The beach stretches for about 3 kilometers and is bordered by the Pacific Ocean, with Tamarindo to the south and Playa Ventanas to the north. The spot is known for its consistent and powerful surf, with waves breaking over a sandy bottom. The main break is found near Hotel Las Tortugas, and there are other peaks along the beach. The surf spot provides both left and right waves. The best surf conditions are usually with a southwest swell, northeast to east winds, and during mid to high tide, especially in the morning between 6 and 9am. At low tide, waves can close out. Playa Grande is a crowded spot, especially during peak seasons, so it’s important to respect the locals and always check the surf etiquette when the lineup is busy. The crowd can be heavy, and localism is present, so be aware and give space. If you want to avoid the main crowd, you can walk along the beach to find less busy peaks—ask at Las Tortugas Hotel for tips. The spot is suitable for all levels, but check your skills before paddling out, be sure that the spot and conditions match your level. The length of the ride is usually less than 50 meters. Access is easy by walking, driving, or taking a short boat ride from Tamarindo. The area is part of a national park that protects leatherback turtle nesting grounds, so be mindful of the environment.
