About this Spot

T box is a surf spot located in Puntarenas, Costa Rica. The spot sits behind the Terraza del Pacifico resort, and you can reach it by driving from Playa Jaco toward Playa Hermosa, then taking the road down to the resort at the last cliff turn. The surf break is known for its rocky bottom mixed with sand, and it works best at low and medium tides. There are a couple of different peaks at T box, with waves that can suck up and form tubes over two large, smooth, mushroom-shaped reef boulders. The waves are not always perfect, but sometimes offer challenging and hollow rides. The spot is considered a regional classic and is best suited for intermediate surfers. The length of the ride is usually less than 50 meters. T box is a consistent surf spot, but the crowd is generally small. The surf spot provides both left and right waves. When the conditions line up, you can expect brown, powerful barrels, sometimes called ‘chocolate thunder.’ The area used to be more secluded before the resort was built in the 1990s, but now it is more accessible and not a secret anymore. Parking is available at the resort, and it is important to be friendly and respectful to the local workers, known as Ticas. Always check the surf forecast, report, map, and webcam before heading out to get the latest conditions. Nearby surf spots include Hermosa, Roca Loca, Gully’s, Jaco Beach, and The Tree. When the spot is crowded, respect the locals and follow surf etiquette. Check your skills before paddling out, be sure that the spot and the conditions match your level. T box is not Costa Rica’s Pipeline, but it offers a unique and challenging tube ride for those looking for something different in the Puntarenas region.
