Overview
About this Spot
Hermosa is a surf spot located in Puntarenas, Costa Rica, about 5 kilometers south of Jaco. The spot is known for its consistent and powerful beach breaks along an 8-kilometer stretch of black sand facing the Pacific Ocean. The main surf peaks include Terrazas, Backyard, The Tree, The Curve, Buda, Turtle Farms, and Tulin. Each peak has its own features, like fast hollow rights at Terrazas, hollow waves at Backyard, heavy peaks at The Tree, and barrels at The Curve. Tulin is a river-mouth break with strong waves and some wildlife hazards. The bottom is mostly sand, but there are rocks in some areas. The surf spot provides both left and right waves. Swell directions from the south, southwest, and south-southwest work best, and the best conditions are usually at mid to high tide. The waves are fast, powerful, and hollow, and the spot is very consistent, but it can get hard to surf when the swell is big. When the swell is large, local reefs and points might be better options. Rips and undertow are common, so check your skills before paddling out, be sure that the spot and conditions fit your surfing level. Beginners should look for easier spots nearby. The area can get crowded, especially at the better peaks, but there are many peaks along the beach where you can find less crowded surf. Respect the locals and always check the surf etiquette when the spot is crowded. Access is easy, with options to walk, bike, or take a taxi from Jaco. The spot is part of the Playa Hermosa-Punta Mala Wildlife Refuge, where Olive Ridley sea turtles nest from July to December. Hazards include strong currents, rocks, and the presence of crocodiles and bull sharks at Tulin. For the latest surf forecast, report, map, and webcam, check local surf resources before heading out.
