Sand Key Park is a surf spot located in Gulf of Mexico, Florida. The spot provides both left and right waves. Sand Key Park is situated on a barrier island that stretches from Madeira Beach to Clearwater. The surf spot features a sandy bottom and works best during low and medium tides. It’s suitable for surfers of all experience levels and offers regular waves that are typically less than 50m in length. The best conditions for surfing at Sand Key Park occur when a west swell combines with offshore winds from the east-southeast. Winter is considered the optimal season for surfing here. The spot can get crowded, so it’s important to respect the locals and follow proper surf etiquette. Always check your skills before paddling out to ensure the spot and conditions match your surfing level. Sand Key Park is part of a 95-acre county-owned area that includes a white sandy beach and various amenities. The park offers facilities such as restrooms, changing rooms, outdoor showers, and a food concession. Visitors can rent beach equipment and enjoy picnic areas. From April through October, loggerhead sea turtles nest and hatch in the area. The park is open daily from 7 a.m. to sunset, with a parking fee of $5 per vehicle. Annual and six-month passes are available. Nearby surf spots include Clearwater Pass, Bellair Beach, Clearwater Beach, Indian Rocks Beach, and Redington Breakwater. When the conditions are right, surfers can catch nice bowling, walled-up rights with beautiful lines. There’s also potential for a closeout left-hand tube. The spot is known for offering opportunities for various maneuvers, including cutbacks, floaters, and airs. Sand Key Park is considered one of the best waves in the north-central part of Pinellas County. To reach the surf spot, drive north on Gulf Boulevard past the Sheraton on Sand Key. Look for the park entrance sign on the left and follow it to the parking area. The most popular parking spot is just north of the pavilion, closest to the designated surfing area.
