Overview
About this Spot
Playa Escondida is a surf spot located in Puntarenas, Costa Rica. The spot is found just north of Jaco and is mainly accessed by boat from Playa Herradura or through the Los Sueños Resort, as the beach is private and direct access is limited. The surf break is a coral reef that works best with low to medium tide, and the spot is known for its world-class quality and regular wave frequency. The spot provides both left and right waves. The length of the ride ranges from 50 to 150 meters. Swell direction from the southwest and winds from the east are the most favorable conditions. Playa Escondida can handle swells up to 10 feet before the waves become less favorable. The water temperature is warm year-round, usually between 26°C and 29.5°C (79°F to 85°F), so a rash vest and board shorts are enough for most surfers. The spot is best suited for intermediate surfers due to the presence of rips, undertow, and rocks, and the reef can be sharp and dangerous at low tide. There are only two main peaks, and the area can get crowded if several boats arrive at the same time. Localism is present, so it is recommended to respect the locals, especially when the spot is crowded, and consider taking a local surf guide from Jaco. Always check the surf etiquette when the spot is busy. Check your skills before paddling out, be sure that the spot and conditions fit your surfing level. Access by boat from Playa Herradura usually costs between $20 and $40 per person. Nearby surf spots include Playa Blanca, Agujas, Jaco Beach, Roca Loca, and T box.
