Hazard Canyon

Hazard Canyon is a surf spot located in the central coast of California, within Montaña de Oro State Park near Los Osos, about 3 to 4 miles down from Morro Rock. To reach the spot, you need to walk about 15 minutes through a forest trail and sand dunes from the park’s parking area. The surf spot is known for its heavy and challenging waves, with a rocky bottom and strong rips and undertow. The wave is fast, with late drops, double ups, boils, and can be unpredictable with closeouts or barrels. The spot is not good for beginners and is best suited for experienced surfers who are comfortable with dangerous conditions, including sharp rocks and the presence of sharks. The length of the ride is usually between 50 and 150 meters. The crowd is moderate, and localism is present, so it’s important to respect the locals, especially when the spot is crowded. Always check the surf etiquette and be aware of where you park your car, as locals are protective of their area. Boards commonly used here are shortboards, mid-lengths, retro boards, mini guns and step-ups on bigger days.
