Overview
About this Spot
The Hoek is a surf spot located in Cape Town, South Africa, at the far right end of Noordhoek Beach. The spot is known for its hollow, barreling right waves that break over a mix of rocks and sand, especially during low tide and on small to medium swells. The best time to surf here is in the summer months, from November to February, when southeast winds help form the sandbanks needed for the wave to break. The surf spot provides right waves. The water is very cold, so wearing a full neoprene wetsuit is necessary. The wave length is usually less than 50 meters, and the take-off zone is steep and critical, making it suitable for experienced surfers only. Access to The Hoek is from the Noordhoek car park, followed by a walk of about 800 meters down the beach towards Chapmans Peak Mountain. The spot can get crowded, especially on weekends and when the surf forecast and report show good conditions. Local surfers are protective of the spot, so it’s important to respect the locals and always follow surf etiquette, especially when the spot is busy. The area is also known for occasional great white shark sightings, so stay alert. The Hoek only breaks when there are sandbanks, which usually happens in summer when the southeast wind is strong. The spot is close to other well-known surf spots like Noordhoek Beach, Dunes, Chapman’s Peak, Kakapo, and Dungeons. The beach is clean and offers views of the mountain in front. Before paddling out, check your skills to make sure the spot and conditions fit your surfing level. For the latest surf forecast, report, map, and webcam updates, check local surf resources before heading out.
