Overview
About this Spot
Virgin Point is a surf spot located in Cape Town, South Africa, between Gordon’s Bay and Rooiels. The spot features a left-hand point break and is best surfed during high tide. The bottom is made up of boulders and rocks, and the area is known for strong rips and undertow. Access to the spot involves parking your car next to the road and walking down a steep mountainside, then jumping off the rocks to enter the water. Getting in is easier down the point, but getting out of the water can be difficult. The wave length ranges from 50 to 150 meters and the spot is rarely crowded, often empty, as it only breaks a few times a year and needs a big southwest swell. The optimal wind for surfing here is from the southeast, and the ideal swell direction is from the southwest. Hazards at Virgin Point include rocks, strong currents, and the presence of sharks. The wave is very powerful and barrels, so using an old board is recommended as equipment can get damaged. The spot is considered dangerous and is best suited for experienced surfers or pros. The paddle out is long, over 20 minutes, or you can access it by boat. Nearby surf spots include Gordons Bay Bikini Beach, Gordons Bay Bikini Shorebreak, Caves, Harbour Island, and Kogel Bay Beach. Always check the surf forecast, report, map, and webcam before heading out to Virgin Point. Respect the locals, especially if the spot is crowded, and always follow surf etiquette. Check your skills before paddling out, be sure that the spot and conditions match your level. Virgin Point is not a beginner-friendly surf spot and is known for its challenging conditions.
