About this Spot
Kogel Bay Beach is a surf spot located in Cape Town, South Africa, along Clarence Drive near Gordon’s Bay. The beach is about 1.9 kilometers long and is part of the Kogel Bay Resort, with three main sections: Sparks Bay Day Camp Beach, Klippies Bay Day Camp Beach, and the main Kogel Bay Beach. The spot is known for its classic beachbreak with sand and rock bottom, offering a variety of peaks up and down the beach when the swell is good. The surf is very consistent, especially in summer, and works well even with smaller swells. The spot provides both left and right waves. The best conditions are usually at medium and high tide. The waves are often hollow and can be powerful, with a length of less than 50 meters. The area is generally not crowded, but always respect the locals and check the surf etiquette when the spot gets busy. Check your skills before paddling out, be sure that the spot and conditions fit your surfing level. The spot is suitable for all levels, but strong rip currents and the presence of sharks mean you should always follow local safety guidelines. The main peak, known as “Caves,” is popular with bodyboarders and has a steep, wedge-shaped wave with a small take-off point. Depending on the sandbanks, you can find waves along the whole stretch. Access to the surf spot is via a short walk from the parking area, which can hold around 200 cars. The beach is also used for picnicking, barbecuing, and camping, with basic facilities available. Watch out for local wildlife like baboons, which may try to take food or belongings. The scenery includes clear water, white sand, and mountains.
