The spot is reached by following a concrete road to a parking area, then walking to the break. The bottom is rocky and the waves break over an uneven reef. The spot provides both left and right waves. The wave length ranges from 150 to 300 meters. Baixa da Viola works on all tides, but many surfers prefer mid-tide. The spot is known for its powerful and challenging waves, and it is recognized as a big wave surf spot that comes to life during large northwest or north swells. It is not recommended for beginners and is best suited for experienced surfers, especially those using shortboards or guns. The area is usually empty, but if you find other surfers in the water, respect the locals and always check the surf etiquette, especially when the spot is crowded. Hazards at Baixa da Viola include rocks, sea urchins, and strong rip currents or undertow, so be careful when entering and exiting the water. The best surf conditions are with northwest or north swells, a minimum swell height of 10 feet, and winds from the southeast or south.
