About this Spot

Kalk Bay Reef is a surf spot located in Cape Town, South Africa, in the fishing village of Kalk Bay on the west coast of False Bay. The spot is a shallow reef break with a rocky and sandy bottom, producing a powerful, hollow left-hand wave with occasional rights. The take-off zone is small and the wave is fast, with short rides usually under 50 meters and sometimes reaching up to 150 meters in good conditions. The spot is best for experienced surfers who are comfortable with shallow reefs, quick take-offs, and the risk of wipeouts onto rocks or reef. Sea urchins and submerged rocks are present, so be careful when paddling out and avoid standing up if you get dragged across the rocks. Localism is a factor here, so respect the locals, especially when the spot is crowded, and always check the surf etiquette before entering the water. The spot is not recommended for beginners. Check your skills before paddling out, be sure that the spot matches your level. The best conditions are with a ground swell from the southeast or south and offshore winds from the west, northwest, or north. The minimum swell for the spot to work is around five feet, and it can handle swells up to four meters or more. The spot works on all tides, but the pushing tide is often best, and it can get crowded, especially when schools are out. To get there, park in the lot near the Brass Bell Restaurant or just before the Cape to Cuba restaurant, cross the railway line using the subway or a gap in the fence, and head to the small sandy beach in front of the peak. You can see your car from the lineup, and there is usually a car guard in the parking lot. The spot is close to Kalk Bay harbour and near other breaks like Kalk Bay Backdoor, Pitzmah, Off The Wall Kalk Bay, Danger Reef, and Electrics.
