Overview
About this Spot
Glen Reef is a surf spot located in Cape Town, South Africa, also known as Bali Bay. The spot sits near Camps Bay beach on the righthand side, with nearby surf spots including Glen Beach, Clifton 4th Beach, Clifton 3rd Beach, and Tidals. Glen Reef features a bottom made of coral reef and sand, and the waves break over a shallow reef that can be as little as a foot deep. The surf spot provides left waves. The best surf conditions are during the winter months, especially from June to August, when the spot is most consistent. The ideal swell direction is from the northwest, and the best wind comes from the east-northeast. The area is sheltered from northeast winds, which helps keep the surf clean. The waves at Glen Reef are hollow, fast, and powerful, and the length of ride is usually less than 50 meters. The spot is suitable for all levels, but the sharp rocks and shallow reef mean you should check your skills before paddling out, be sure that the spot and conditions fit your surfing level. The spot is very consistent, so you can expect regular surf, but it can get crowded when the forecast is good, especially in winter. Localism can be an issue, so respect the locals and always check the surf etiquette when the spot is crowded. The water temperature is around 14.1°C, so a good wetsuit is recommended. Access to Glen Reef is a bit secluded, with limited parking at the intersection of Lower Kloof Road and Victoria Road, or along Victoria Road in designated bays. In busy summer months, parking in Camps Bay and walking to the spot is suggested. For the latest surf report, forecast, map, and webcam updates, check local resources before heading out.
