Overview
About this Spot
Clifton 1st Beach is a surf spot located in Cape Town, South Africa, on the Atlantic Seaboard. The spot sits in a secluded cove, separated from the other Clifton beaches by large boulders, and is known for its white sand and clear, cold water. Access is via steep stairs from Victoria Road, and parking is available along the road, but spaces can be limited, so arriving early is a good idea. The beach is dog-friendly, allowing off-leash dogs. Facilities are basic, with a small ablution block, and for more amenities, surfers usually head to Clifton 4th Beach. The surf at Clifton 1st Beach is best when a big westerly swell pushes in during winter, as the waves are generally small and lack power, but can get better with the right conditions. There are a few peaks and sometimes a small shorebreak. The spot is sheltered from wind, which helps the waves form, and the bottom is a mix of sand and rocks. The surf spot provides both left and right waves. The wave length is usually less than 50 meters. The spot is mostly empty, but can get a few people when other nearby spots like Clifton 2nd Beach, Clifton 3rd Beach, Clifton 4th Beach, Gasworks, and Glen Reef are crowded. The spot is suitable for all levels, especially for groms on bodyboards looking to improve their skills, but it is important to check your skills before paddling out, be sure that the spot and conditions fit your surfing level. The best tide is medium to high. Always respect the locals, especially when the spot is crowded, and remember to check the surf etiquette. For the latest surf forecast, report, map, and webcam, check local surf resources before heading out. Clifton 1st Beach is also known as a quieter beach in the area, and is sometimes referred to as the gay beach of Clifton.
