About this Spot

Buffels Bay is a surf spot located in Cape Town, South Africa, inside the Cape Point Reserve on the False Bay side. The spot features a classic right-hand point break that works best with a large south swell, usually in the 15-20 foot range, and is most consistent when a strong cyclonic system is out at sea. The wave breaks over a bouldery bottom and can be fast and powerful, with rides stretching between 150 and 300 meters. The surf here is best suited for experienced or pro surfers due to the challenging takeoff, sudden jacking up of the wave in deep water, and the need to race through sections over rocks and past urchins. Buffels Bay only starts working at about 6 feet and can be inconsistent, so checking the surf forecast and report is important before heading out. The spot is known for its local crew, and localism is strong, so respect the locals, wait your turn, and always follow surf etiquette, especially when the spot is crowded. The lineup can get busy when the surf is on, and patience is needed as waiting for a wave is common. Many surfers have broken boards or suffered injuries here, so check your skills before paddling out, be sure that the spot and conditions match your level. The best conditions are usually with a southwest wind and at medium to high tide, but early sessions can also be good. The area is scenic, but be aware of baboons in the reserve and avoid feeding them. The bottom is rocky with boulders and urchins, so caution is advised. Nearby surf spots include Black Rocks, Extensions, Dias Beach, Southwest Reef, and Olifantsbos. For more details, check the latest surf map, webcam, and forecast before planning your session.
