About this Spot

Vetchies Reef is a surf spot located in Durban, South Africa, near the southern end of the Golden Mile and close to the uShaka Beach area. The spot sits about 150 meters from the Durban Harbor and is built on a man-made reef and old harbor wall, with a bottom made of coral reef and rocks. The wave at Vetchies Reef is fast, hollow, and breaks over a shallow, semi-submerged jetty, with the best conditions usually happening on big south swells in winter or during cyclone east swells in summer. The spot works best at high tide, with wave sizes from 2ft up to 5ft before it gets too heavy. There are two main sections: the ‘Pinnacle’ on the outside, which is more serious and hollow, and the ‘inside’ section, which is less hollow and offers longer rides up to 150 meters. The surf spot provides right waves. Hazards include rocks, urchins, man-made dangers like buoys, pollution, and the presence of sharks, especially near the Pinnacle. The takeoff is quick and the barrels are tight, with the wave coming out of deep water onto shallow reef, so be careful of rock boils and shallow spots, especially if the tide is not full. The paddle out is long, about 400 meters to the Pinnacle, but you can cut time by paddling on the inside of the reef. Vetchies Reef is not usually crowded, but the small takeoff zone can get busy when it works, so respect the locals and check the surf etiquette when the spot is crowded. Always check your skills before paddling out, be sure that the spot and conditions match your level. Water temperatures range from 20°C in winter to 27°C in summer, so a wetsuit is not always needed. For the latest surf forecast, report, map, and webcam, check local surf resources. Parking is available at the Marine Lifesaving Club or on the Harbor’s North Pier, with a walk or paddle to the spot. Nearby surf spots include South Beach, Wedge, New Pier, North Beach, and Battery Beach.
