About this Spot

Whites Beach is a surf spot located in Auckland, New Zealand, on the west coast just north of Piha Beach. The spot is known for its sandy bottom and fast, powerful waves that break over good sand banks. The surf here is consistent, with the best conditions during medium and high tides. This spot provides both left and right waves. The length of the ride is usually less than 50 meters. Whites Beach is considered a regional classic and is best suited for intermediate surfers due to the strong rips and undertow. Access to the beach is by foot, either from the northern end of Piha Beach or via the Rose Track from Anawhata Road. You can park on the grass near a driveway with a gate on Anawhata Road and follow the track down to the beach. Another way to reach the spot is by paddling around from the far end of North Piha, which takes about 5 minutes, but do not attempt this when the surf is over 6 foot. The area is surrounded by steep cliffs and sand dunes, and the beach is less crowded compared to other nearby spots like Piha, Te Henga, Bethells Beach, O’Neill, and Karekare. Facilities at the beach include toilets, showers, and changing rooms. The nearest city is Auckland, about a 30-minute drive away. Whites Beach is also home to grey-faced petrels nesting around pohutukawa trees. The spot has a haunting atmosphere and is usually empty, but always respect the locals and check the surf etiquette, especially if the spot gets crowded. Before paddling out, check your skills to make sure the spot and conditions fit your surfing level. For the latest surf forecast, report, map, and webcam updates, check reliable surf resources before heading out.
