Overview
About this Spot
Karekare is a surf spot located in Auckland, New Zealand, on the west coast about 35 kilometers from Auckland city. The beach is part of the Waitākere Ranges Regional Park and is known for its black sand and rugged landscape. The spot is easy to find by driving over the Waitakere Hills, following the road towards Piha, and taking the steep turn down to Karekare. Parking is available near the beach, and you can reach the sand by following the stream from the carpark. Facilities include toilets and showers. The surf spot provides both left and right waves. The main wave is found at the right end of the beach near the rocks. The bottom is sandy, and the best surf conditions are usually at low and medium tide. Swell from the southwest and wind from the east are ideal. The waves can be punchy and hollow, and on bigger days, they break further out with strong currents, so check your skills before paddling out, be sure that the spot and conditions fit your surfing level. Rips and undertow are common, especially along the rocks, so take care and always be aware of the forecast and surf report before heading out. The spot is consistent and can get crowded, especially since it is close to Auckland, but it is generally more laid back than Piha. When the spot is crowded, respect the locals and check the surf etiquette. The Karekare Surf Life Saving Club is present on the beach, and there are programs for younger surfers. Nearby surf spots include Piha, Whites Beach, Whatipu, Te Henga, and Bethells Beach. Karekare is also known for its natural attractions like Karekare Falls and walking tracks.
