Overview
About this Spot
Waiheke Is is a surf spot located in Auckland, New Zealand, on Waiheke Island in the Hauraki Gulf. The main surf beach is Onetangi Beach, which is the largest beach on the island and features a long stretch of white sand. The name Onetangi means ‘Weeping Sands’ in Māori, a reference to a historical event in the area. Surfing at Waiheke Is depends on a big tropical cyclone northeast swell, and the spot only breaks when the swell is strong enough, usually when other East Coast Auckland spots are too big. When the forecast shows a 10ft swell up the coast, you can expect 4-6ft waves at Waiheke Is if the direction and wind are right. The best conditions are with a north or northeast swell and west or southwest winds, and the spot works best at medium tide. The bottom is a mix of sand and rocks. The surf spot provides both left and right waves. The length of the ride is between 50 and 150 meters. The spot is usually empty, but always respect the locals and check the surf etiquette, especially if the spot gets crowded. Access to Waiheke Is involves taking a ferry or boat from Auckland to Waiheke Island, then a bus from the ferry terminal to Oneroa or directly to Onetangi Beach. The swell at Onetangi is more consistent and frequent than on the east-facing beaches north of Auckland. The spot is suitable for all levels, but check your skills before paddling out, be sure that the spot matches your level. Always check the latest surf report, forecast, map, and webcam before heading out, as conditions can change quickly and the spot does not break often. Nearby surf spots include Orere Point, Tamaki Reef, Takapuna, O’Neills Reef, and Mairangi Bay.
