About this Spot
Warilla Beach is a surf spot located in New South Wales, Australia, in the Shellharbour region just south of Wollongong. The beach stretches for about 2 kilometers from the mouth of the Illawarra River to Elliot Lake, with easy access from Headland Parade and parking available near the Elliot Lake Bridge. Warilla Beach features a sandy bottom with some rocks, and the surf breaks are spread along the beach, with multiple peaks especially near Windang Island and Barrack Point. The spot is known for its consistent surf, working on all tides, and is suitable for all levels, but beginners will find the best conditions at the more sheltered peaks, while intermediate and advanced surfers can look for more challenging waves near Windang Island and Barrack Point. Swell starts working from a minimum height of 2 feet. The waves are usually less than 50 meters in length. Warilla Beach is patrolled by lifeguards for seven months of the year, mainly at the northern end between Christmas and Easter. Facilities include outdoor showers, public toilets, and a beach wheelchair when lifeguards are on duty. There are rips, undertow, and shifting sandbars, so always check your skills before paddling out, be sure that the spot and conditions fit your surfing level. Localism can be present, especially when the spot is crowded, so respect the locals and always follow surf etiquette. The area is known for the presence of urchins and sharks, so stay aware in the water. Nearby surf spots include Barrack Point, Windang Island, Mini Pipe, Suckhole, and Cowries.
