Overview
About this Spot
Makapuu is a surf spot located in Oahu East Side, Hawaii. The spot provides both left and right waves. Makapuu is known for its powerful and hollow shorebreak, making it popular for bodyboarding and bodysurfing. The adjacent reef break, called ‘Suicides,’ offers a fast, hollow right-hander over shallow rock and reef. Makapuu is exposed to consistent trade winds, which can create choppy conditions, especially in summer. Optimal surf conditions occur with north-northwest to east-northeast swells and calm or offshore winds from south to west. The best tides for surfing are medium, with wave heights typically ranging from chest-high to well overhead. Due to shallow reef and strong currents, Makapuu is best suited for intermediate to advanced surfers and bodysurfers. Check your skills before paddling out to ensure the spot and conditions match your level. Access to Makapuu Beach is convenient, with a paved road leading to Makapuu Beach Park, which offers ample parking. While the beach is generally welcoming, exercise caution due to strong currents and potential hazards from the shallow reef and shorebreak. The area is known for its pristine water quality. The local vibe is usually mellow, but always respect the locals and follow surf etiquette, especially when the spot is crowded. Makapuu provides consistent surf conditions year-round. Watch out for jellyfish that blow in with the tradewinds. No standup surfing is allowed when lifeguards are present. Nearby spots include Makapuu Beach, Baby Makapuu, Sandy Beach, China Walls, and Turtles. Makapuu Point, rising 647 feet above sea level, forms the eastern tip of Oahu and features a prominent lighthouse. The area offers scenic views, including a panoramic lookout on Kalanianaole Highway. Makapuu Beach Park is part of the eastern end of Oahu, and a popular hiking trail leads to Makapuu Lighthouse. From November to April, hikers may spot Humpback whales offshore.
