About this Spot

El Hoyo is a surf spot located in Guanacaste, Costa Rica, near the town of Puerto Caldera in the Golfo de Nicoya region. The spot is found at the right end of the first beach by the jetty, close to the dock. To get there, follow the same direction as Corralillo, but turn right at the first beach instead of continuing left. You will need to leave your car at the entrance parking lot and walk in, as cars are not allowed on the dirt road to the beach. Access is public, but you may have to ask the dock guard for permission to use the road. Alternatively, you can get a boat ride from Caldera Beach for a small fee. The surf spot provides right waves. The bottom is mostly sand, and the best surf conditions are during low and medium tides. The spot is considered a regional classic and is suitable for all levels, but always check your skills before paddling out, be sure that the spot matches your level. The wave length ranges from 50 to 150 meters, and the surf is very consistent, especially in the summer months like June. The area is usually empty, but when it gets crowded, respect the locals and check the surf etiquette. There are no services at the beach, so bring water and anything else you need for the day. Hazards include rocks, rip currents, boat traffic, and pollution. The water temperature is warm, around 30°C (86°F), so a thin wetsuit or rash guard is enough. Nearby surf spots include Corralillo, Caldera, Tivives, Dona Ana, and Boca Barranca. For the latest surf forecast, report, map, and webcam, check online resources before heading out.
