Overview
About this Spot
Boca Barranca is a surf spot located in Puntarenas, Costa Rica, just north of Puerto Caldera and close to San José. The spot is known for its long left-hand point break, with waves that can reach up to 800 yards, making it one of the longest in the country. The bottom is mostly sand with some scattered rocks here and there. The best conditions are with swells coming from the south and southwest, a minimum swell height of 3 feet, and winds from the north, northeast, or east. The wave is suitable for shortboards, mid and retro boards, and longboards, and is especially popular with longboarders. Boca Barranca is not recommended for beginners, so check your skills before paddling out, be sure that the spot matches your level. The wave is world class when it works, but it only breaks sometimes and needs a big south swell. The spot can get crowded, especially since it is the closest quality break to San José, so respect the locals and always check the surf etiquette when the lineup is busy. The area is known for high theft, so it is safer to park near the bridge and pay for guarded parking. There are some guest houses and cabinas for lodging north of the big resort, with more affordable options off-season. The water is brown due to river runoff, but it is not as polluted as it used to be. Be aware that crocodiles have been seen in the river and sometimes swim out to the lineup, so use caution when entering the water. The spot is near other breaks like Dona Ana, Caldera, El Hoyo, Corralillo, and Tivives. Access is straightforward via the main coastal route, and the spot is easy to find by looking for the bridge over Rio Barranca.
