Overview
About this Spot
Flamingo Point is a surf spot located in Guanacaste, Costa Rica, at Playa Flamingo. The spot is a lava point break with a coral reef bottom and is known for being finicky, breaking only with specific swell windows, usually from 170 to 200 degrees south. The wave length is less than 50 meters and the spot sometimes breaks, often after the main swell has already passed other standout spots in the area. The best surf conditions are found during low and medium tides, with wave heights typically ranging from 3 to 8 feet. The ideal swell direction is from the south-southwest, and the preferred wind comes from the east. The water temperature is warm, around 29.4°C (85°F), so a thin summer wetsuit or rash vest is usually enough. Flamingo Point is generally empty, even when working, but always respect the locals and check the surf etiquette, especially if the spot gets crowded. The spot is suitable for all levels, but always check your skills before paddling out, be sure that the spot and conditions fit your surfing level. Hazards include rips and rocks, and the area is home to plenty of tropical fish. To get there, fly into Liberia, Costa Rica, rent a car, and travel about 30 minutes southwest towards Huacas and then Playa Flamingo. Take the low road towards Flamingo Beach Resort, pass the resort, connect to the parallel beach road, and turn left or make a U-turn around the front of the resort with the ocean on the passenger side. After about a quarter mile, you’ll reach the cliff house where you can park on the lava point. Nearby surf spots include Brasilito, El Estero, Pico Grande, Playa Grande, and Tamarindo.
