About this Spot

Barrigona is a surf spot located in Guanacaste, Costa Rica, about an hour north of Sámara. The spot is known for its consistent surf, with both beach break and point break options. The bottom is a mix of sand and rocks, and the waves break over uneven reef and sand. The surf spot provides both left and right waves. The best surf conditions are usually during mid to high tide, with offshore winds and a strong southwest swell. The spot is best for intermediate surfers due to strong currents, rips, and undertow. Always check your skills before paddling out, be sure that the spot and conditions fit your surfing level. The length of the ride can range from 50 to 150 meters. The area is rarely crowded, and sometimes you might find only a few surfers in the water, even on weekends. Respect the locals, especially when the spot is crowded, and always follow surf etiquette. The beach is surrounded by jungle and high cliffs, with clear blue water and light golden sand. There are no hotels or restaurants at Barrigona, so bring your own supplies. Parking is available right in front of the beach near the rivermouth, but do not leave valuables in your car. It is recommended to use a local car and a 4×4 vehicle, as all access roads are dirt and can be challenging, especially in the rainy season. There are three main routes from Sámara, with the long route being the most reliable during the green season. Ask at the Samara-Carillo Infocenter for the best directions and current road conditions. Nearby surf spots include Playa Samara, Playa Nosara, Olga’s, Pelada, and Camaronal. For the latest surf forecast, report, map, and webcam, check local surf resources before heading out.
