About this Spot

Playa Bejuco is a surf spot located in Puntarenas, Costa Rica. The beach is about a mile long with dark sand and an estuary at the southern end, which helps form sandbars that create hollow and powerful waves. The spot is found about 10 to 15 minutes south of Esterillos, accessible via Route 34, with signs pointing to dirt roads leading to the beach. Parking is available near a bar on the left side of the access road. The surf at Playa Bejuco is consistent, with waves breaking over a sandy bottom. The spot provides both left and right waves. Rides usually range from 50 to 150 meters, and on good days can reach up to 300 meters. The best surf conditions are during mid to high tide, with a south or southwest swell and east or northeast winds. The beach is usually empty, but always respect the locals and check the surf etiquette if the spot gets crowded. Playa Bejuco is best for intermediate to advanced surfers. Strong rip currents and undertow are common, so check your skills before paddling out, be sure that the spot matches your level. On bigger days, paddling out can take up to 30 minutes, especially when the surf is between 6ft and 12ft. There are no lifeguards, and the area is known for rips, so always be careful. Floating logs in the water may be present, and these can sometimes be crocodiles. Sharks have also been reported in the area. The beach is semi-remote, so don’t leave valuables in your car or near windows, as thefts have happened. For surf forecast, report, map, and webcam updates, check local resources before heading out. Nearby surf spots include Esterillos, The Tree, Gully’s, Hermosa, and T box. Surf schools and rental shops are available in the area for lessons and equipment. Always respect the environment and the people around you.
