Overview
About this Spot
Sandy Bay is a surf spot located in Cape Town, South Africa, just south of Llandudno. The spot is known for its short shorebreak waves that can form hollow barrels over shallow sand banks, with a bottom made up of both sand and rocks. The surf spot provides both left and right waves. Sandy Bay works best at low to medium tide and handles southeasterly winds well, while a southerly wind is manageable if not too strong. The spot is fairly consistent all year, but winter often brings the best surf conditions. The length of the ride is usually less than 50 meters. The beach is secluded and is often frequented by naturists, with large granite boulders dividing the area into smaller coves. Access to Sandy Bay requires a 20-minute walk from the car park at the southern end of Llandudno or from the northern end of Hout Bay, and parking is limited, so arriving early is a good idea. There are no shops or public restrooms at the beach, so bring your own supplies. The spot is generally empty, but when it gets crowded, respect the locals and always check the surf etiquette. The area is surrounded by the Twelve Apostles mountain range, adding to the scenery. The spot is suitable for all levels, but you should check your skills before paddling out, be sure that the spot and conditions fit your surfing level. Be aware of rocks in the water and keep an eye on the forecast, report, map, and webcam for up-to-date surf conditions. There have been reports of theft, so keep an eye on your belongings and be cautious, especially if you are alone or visiting during quiet times. Nearby surf spots include Llandudno, Sandy Bay South, Hout Bay Harbour Wall, Hout Bay, and Dungeons.
