About this Spot

Greenways Reef is a surf spot located in Cape Town, South Africa, near the Greenways Country Estate on the eastern side of Strand, along the route to Gordons Bay. This reef break sits out at sea and is accessed by a paddle out of more than 20 minutes or by boat. The bottom is a mix of coral reef, rocks, and sand. The spot is known for its consistent surf, especially during winter when medium to large swells between 4 and 8 feet are common, but it can work at other times of the year too. The best conditions are with a clean swell and little or no wind, and the spot works best on a mid to high tide. The waves are hollow, fast, and powerful, with rides usually under 50 meters, though they can sometimes reach up to 150 meters. The surf spot provides both left and right waves. The area is usually empty, so you might have the place to yourself, but always respect the locals and check the surf etiquette if the spot is crowded. Hazards include strong rips, undertow, shallow reef, rocks, and the presence of sharks, so stay alert and bring a mate. The paddle out is tricky and rocky, so be prepared for a challenge. Check your skills before paddling out, be sure that the spot and conditions fit your surfing level. The spot is best for intermediate surfers who are comfortable with challenging conditions. Nearby surf spots include Silkies, Harbour Island, Gordons Bay Bikini Shorebreak, Duckies Reef, and Gordons Bay Bikini Beach. For the latest surf forecast, report, map, and webcam updates, check local resources before heading out. Always be aware of the conditions and respect the environment and other surfers in the water.
