Overview
About this Spot
Big Bay is a surf spot located in Cape Town, South Africa, in the Bloubergstrand area, north of the city. The spot is known for its sandy bottom and works on all tides, offering a regional classic beach break with regular surf. The surf spot provides both left and right waves. Wave height is usually best during the winter months, with swells from 4 feet and sometimes reaching up to 8 or 9 feet. The length of the ride ranges from 50 to 150 meters. The water temperature is cold, between 10 and 17 degrees Celsius, so a wetsuit is recommended. The prevailing winds are from the southeast, and the area is also popular for kitesurfing and windsurfing. Big Bay is easy to reach by traveling north from Cape Town along the west coast, passing Blue Berg Strand, and is located between Melkbosstrand and Blue Berg Strand. There is plenty of parking available near the spot, and you can find a shop and a café close by for food and drinks. The beach is clean and has received the Blue Flag Beach Award. Surf conditions are best in the mornings before the wind picks up, and the spot can get crowded on weekends, but weekdays are usually less busy. When the surf is big, the crowd tends to thin out at the back. Rips and undertow can be present, and there are some rocks, so always check the surf report, forecast, and webcam before heading out. Respect the locals, especially when the spot is crowded, and always follow surf etiquette. Check your skills before paddling out, be sure that the spot and conditions fit your surfing level. Local surf schools offer lessons and equipment for all levels. Nearby surf spots include Little Bay, 3de Steen, Blaauwberg, Selis, and Haakgat Point.
