Overview
About this Spot
Blaauwberg is a surf spot located in Cape Town, South Africa, known for its sandy bottom and regular surf conditions. The spot is also called Blouberg and sits near the main beach, Bloubergstrand, which is popular for its wide white sand and views of Table Mountain. The area is exposed to strong winds, so you might see kitesurfers and windsurfers out as well. The surf spot provides both left and right waves. The waves here break close to shore and can be powerful, especially on bigger days, so check your skills before paddling out, be sure that the spot and the conditions fit your surfing level. If the surf is big, expect a tough paddle out and only go in if you are fit and can duck dive well. The water is cold because of the Benguela current, so a wetsuit is recommended. Blaauwberg is not usually crowded, but when it gets busy, respect the locals and follow surf etiquette to avoid problems. There are several peaks, so you can usually find a spot to yourself, but don’t crowd one peak or drop in on others. The best place to surf is in front of a seafood restaurant called Jimmy’s, and you can also check the break opposite the traffic circle or 50 meters down Otto Du Plessis, and another one opposite Doodles. The length of the ride is usually less than 50 meters. The spot is suitable for all levels, but always check the surf report, forecast, and webcam before heading out. Nearby surf spots include Selis, Little Bay, Big Bay, 3de Steen, and Sunset Beach. The area is also home to marine life like whales, dolphins, and seals. For access, drive to Milnerton, take the turnoff towards the Protea Hotel, follow the signs to Dolphin Beach, and continue past the circle. Always check the map for directions and parking options.
