Overview
About this Spot
Arica is a surf spot located in Lima, Peru, about 35 to 40 kilometers south of Lima city, just above Playa Pulpos and marked on the Pan American highway as Playa Arica. The spot is known for its exposed coral reef bottom and a thick, ledgy two-way reef peak that can ride more like a beach break when the waves are small, with shifting peaks. When the swell is bigger, from 6 to 10 feet, a main peak forms and tubes can appear, but the wave often closes out. The spot provides both left and right waves. The best surf conditions are during the winter months, with southwest swells and northeast offshore winds. The optimal tide is low to medium. Arica is usually empty, but sometimes local trends can bring more surfers for a period. The spot is considered a regional classic and is best suited for intermediate surfers. The wave length is generally less than 50 meters. Hazards include sea urchins, rocks, and strong rips or undertow, so caution is needed. The water temperature ranges from 21 to 26°C (70 to 79°F) in February and drops to 15 to 20°C (59 to 68°F) in August, so check the forecast and bring the right wetsuit. Access is straightforward by car from Lima, and nearby towns like Lurin and Punta Hermosa have food and clothing stores. The area is generally uncrowded, but if the spot is busy, respect the locals and always follow surf etiquette. Check your skills before paddling out, be sure that the spot and conditions fit your surfing level. For more details, check the surf report, map, and webcam for current conditions. Nearby surf spots include Playa Los Pulpos, Playa El Silencio, Caballeros, Señoritas, and Pico Alto.
