About this Spot
Centinela is a surf spot located in Central Peru, Peru, near Huaura and about a 20-minute drive from the city. The spot features a mix of sand and rocks on the bottom, with waves that can reach over two meters. The surf break is a left-hand point with several sections, offering different types of waves for various skill levels. The outside section is best for intermediate and expert surfers, with waves breaking close to rocks and reaching sizes from 4 to 10 feet. The takeoff can be intense, with backwash and sidewash, and the lip can throw you forward if you catch it wrong. The inside section is usually more mellow, suitable for beginners, and holds from about 2 to 7 feet. The ride on the outside can go for about 100-150 meters, and the inside section can be surfed for another 200 meters. The spot is very consistent with all swells, and the best conditions are at low tide, especially when there is more sand in the bay. West swells work best, but any swell direction can provide surfable waves. The area is rarely crowded, but always respect the locals and check the surf etiquette when the spot is busy. Access to Centinela is via dirt roads, and a 4×4 vehicle is recommended due to rough terrain. The spot is close to the Panamericana Norte highway at km 152, with a 5 km detour to the beach. There are strong currents and rocks, so check your skills before paddling out, be sure that the spot and conditions fit your surfing level. There is a surf camp and cabins on the beach, and more accommodation options in nearby Huacho. Be cautious with your belongings, as theft has been reported in the area.
